PERFORMER | Kevin Clash |
DEBUT | 1989 |
Watson is the faithful companion (and dog) owned by Sherlock Hemlock. Appearing in "Mysterious Theater" sketches on Sesame Street, Watson often sniffs out the solution before his master, and tries, unsuccessfully, to communicate that fact through barks and whines. His name is a reference to Sherlock Holmes' own companion Dr. Watson.
Outside of the "Mysterious Theater" segments, Watson accompanied Sherlock Hemlock in a few street plots, including Episode 2751, 2816, and 2873, as well as the CD-ROM game Search and Learn Adventures.
Two different but similar dog puppets have been used to portray Watson. He has floppy ears in the "Mysterious Theater" segments and short ears in his subsequent street scene appearances.
Watson's earliest appearance was in the 1986 book A Bird's Best Friend, where he was depicted as a medium-sized, long-haired orange-brown dog in a deerstalker cap and matching coat like Sherlock's. In his Muppet appearances, Watson is a smaller brown dog who wears only a collar.
Notes[]
- The puppet that would eventually become Watson was used as Dickey in Episode 2259, coincidentally performed here by Clash, and would be used for other small dogs over the course of the series.
- Sherlock also has a canary named Watson, as mentioned in Episode 0470.
