World AIDS Day (December 1) was introduced by the United Nations in 1998 to focus on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Each year presents a new theme that inspires the events held around the world.
In 2002, the focus on the campaign was stigma and discrimination. Among the events was a town hall meeting at the UN Headquarters on November 26, where Whoopi Goldberg and Kami from Takalani Sesame appeared side by side.
“"Ms. Goldberg introduced Kami from Takalani Sesame, South Africa’s production of Sesame Street -– a recently introduced HIV-positive Muppet. Kami, a 5-year-old AIDS orphan, told the participants about her friends and about living with HIV/AIDS. She said she loved Kofi Annan because he loved the entire world, and she hoped that everyone would get along."[1]”
