A Young Grasshopper appears in the "Elmo the Musical" segment, "Karate Master the Musical." Despite his appearance and eagerness, he asserts he's actually a middle-aged grasshopper.

A resident of an Eastern animal village, he is the biggest fanatic of Karate Master Elmo and quickly becomes his protégé. Soon after, his straw home winds up destroyed by the Ooze, who is out to destroy all shapes in the village. Everyone eventually learns that his hared of shapes stems from the fact that he has no shape himself. The grasshopper inspires his teacher with an idea and Elmo makes some wooden shapes that the Ooze can use to become any shape he desires.

The character is a reference to the oft-quoted phrase, "Patience, young grasshopper," originating in Kung Fu. Elmo delivers said line to the grasshopper throughout the segment. The puppet is repurposed from an Anything Muppet insect, once used for Gus Hopper.
